Dounia, is the story of a little girl who leaves Alep, Syria. From a peaceful city to a wartorn region, we see Dounia's life change from one day to the next. Dounia and her family must leave Syria, and on their journey, her imagination and a little magic give her strength. At the end, the book refers to a Canadian model of community sponsorship, where Dounia and her family are welcomed by a Canadian family. I really loved the simple trichromatic illustrations. This is a great read aloud for grades 2-4.
