Celebrate Le mois de l'Histoire des Noirs

Le mois de l’Histoire des Noirs is fast approaching! Historically, it has been a challenge finding books to celebrate Black History Month in French. Recently, I’ve seen a real effort on the part of publishers. Each time new books are released, I look for titles that will add more representation of Black figures and characters in French children’s literature.

Last year, I curated the Black History Month in French collection. It’s made up of 40 handpicked titles including biographies of Civil Rights activists, picture books featuring Black characters from around the world, and historical novels. When selecting titles, I chose to represent Francophone Black Identities: the Caribbean, Louisiana, Africa and French Black kids. I tried to steer clear of stereotypes of the white savior, the adopted child and the "sans papier." Readers will find quite a few books that show interracial friendships, but are not about interracial relationships. I just want to spotlight a few incontournables (must haves):

It's a privilege to be able to read these books for you, and make these selections. Years ago, teachers were asking for diversity, but I couldn't find enough titles to meet their demand. These titles are topnotch, and I wish I had had them in my dual language classroom in Brooklyn.

Bonne lecture à tous et à toutes !

- Marie

La Trompette de Louis

La Trompette de Louis

La trompette de Louis is another authentic French book. It’s a gorgeous biography of Louis Armstrong, perfect for little ones from Pre-K through grade 1. I love the illustrations in deep blue and pinkish red. The illustrations portray a vibrant New Orleans with a strong jazz culture.

Henry et la liberté
Henry et la liberté

Henry et la liberté

Henri et la liberté is the true story of Henry Brown who found freedom by escaping in a box. It does not shy away from telling the hard story of slavery (giving of slaves as inheritance, separation of families), and yet it does so in words that students in grades 2 through 5 can reflect on. Illustrated by Kadir Nelson, it’s a little gem of a historical recount.

L’incroyable destin de Katherine Johnson, mathématicienne de génie à la NASA

L’incroyable destin de Katherine Johnson - mathématicienne de génie à la Nasa is a favorite. Have you ever watched Hidden Figures? This biography retraces the life of Katherine Johnson from her modest beginnings to her greatest accomplishments. It’s also a historical nonfiction text that provides context to explain how remarkable her achievements were both as a woman and person of color. It is fantastic to read aloud to students in grades 3 through 6.

Libre !

Libre ! is a nonfiction book written by French author Fleur Daugey. It is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read about Harriet Tubman. It’s actually the only book I know of her in French, and I wish it existed in English and Spanish. Great for grades 3-8, the book alternates between a first person narrative as Harriet Tubman, and a third person expository text to contextualize her thoughts.
