An Update on Black Representation

Two years ago, in 2021, we wrote about the underrepresentation of Black protagonists in children’s literature - especially in Spanish! Today, we are happy to share that we are seeing a few additional profiles of Black protagonists. Strong female characters in Cuenta conmigo and La estudiante mayor, and a boy who does not follow gender stereotypes in La falda morada de Leo are a testament to authors’ and illustrators’ willingness to explore more characters.

Another positive development is that publishers are choosing to represent more Black Caribbean communities. To Si Quisqueya fuera un color, we can now add ¡Al carnaval! Una celebración en Santa Lucía. There is still a lot of ground to cover, but this increase is a promising change to the trend. With that said, here are some new(er) releases to add to your classroom library!

Yours in curation,

- Diego and Marie

By getting their hands dirty, these kids turned an abandoned space into something beautiful and useful while learning about healthy, sustainable eating and collaboration.
